Intent
Drama gives young people the confidence to step forward, communicate with conviction and see the world through the eyes of others. Through performance, collaboration, and creativity, pupils develop not only as performers but as thoughtful, resilient, and articulate individuals, ready to meet the challenges of life with confidence. Drama is far more than acting. It encourages pupils to explore ideas, challenge perceptions, and appreciate different viewpoints while developing empathy, resilience, and teamwork. Through practical performance, scripted work, and creative exploration, pupils learn to communicate with clarity, listen carefully to others, and work collaboratively to achieve a shared vision.
Rooted in our Catholic ethos, Drama nurtures respect, compassion, and an appreciation of the dignity of every person. By stepping into the lives and experiences of others, pupils develop understanding, tolerance, and the confidence to respond thoughtfully to the world around them. They learn that creativity can be a powerful way of building community and promoting the common good.
As pupils progress through the curriculum, they encounter an increasingly rich range of theatrical styles, practitioners, and performance techniques. They learn to devise, rehearse, perform, and evaluate drama for different audiences and purposes, developing both practical expertise and the confidence to communicate ideas with authenticity and imagination.
Every pupil is encouraged to flourish. Expert guidance, purposeful challenge, and carefully planned support create an environment in which young people feel safe to take creative risks, learn from one another and celebrate individual strengths. Through regular performance and reflection, pupils develop self-belief, resilience, and the confidence to present themselves in a wide variety of situations, both on and off the stage.
Learning extends well beyond the classroom through the Performing Arts Club, whole-school productions, theatre visits, local festivals, and a wide range of enrichment opportunities. These experiences broaden horizons, strengthen friendships, and allow pupils to experience the excitement of performing for real audiences while developing leadership, responsibility, and teamwork.
The communication, collaboration and creative thinking developed through Drama prepare pupils for a wide range of future pathways. Whether progressing to GCSE Drama, further study in the performing arts or careers where confidence, presentation, empathy, and teamwork are essential, pupils leave with skills that will benefit them throughout their education, employment, and everyday lives.
