Intent
Every great invention begins with an idea. Design & Technology encourages pupils to think creatively, solve practical problems and transform ideas into products that have purpose and meaning. At Our Lady’s, pupils learn that successful design is about more than making things well; it is about understanding the needs of others, using resources responsibly and creating solutions that improve the world around us.

Our broad curriculum embraces Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles, giving pupils the opportunity to develop a wide range of practical, technical, and creative skills. From their earliest projects they learn to design, make, evaluate, and refine their work, building the confidence and expertise needed to become thoughtful designers and skilled makers. As pupils progress, they tackle increasingly ambitious projects, applying their knowledge creatively and taking genuine pride in producing outcomes of the highest quality.
Inspired by our Catholic values, pupils are encouraged to approach every project with integrity, creativity, and respect for others. They learn that thoughtful design considers the wellbeing of people, the responsible use of resources and our shared responsibility to care for creation. By understanding how innovation can improve lives and strengthen communities, pupils begin to recognise that their own ideas have the potential to make a positive difference.
Knowledge and practical skills develop side by side throughout the curriculum. Designing, making, testing, and evaluating become natural parts of the creative process as pupils revisit key concepts and apply them in increasingly challenging contexts. They soon discover that successful design rarely happens first time; it grows through careful thinking, perseverance, and a willingness to refine ideas until the best solution is achieved.
Innovation thrives in an environment where ideas are valued, and mistakes are recognised as part of the design process. Expert guidance, purposeful challenge, and carefully planned support help pupils develop confidence in their abilities while refining their practical and creative skills through perseverance and reflection.
Learning extends well beyond the classroom through enterprise projects, competitions, industry links, and educational visits. Experiences such as the Year 8 £10 Enterprise Challenge, visits to manufacturers and design exhibitions, together with opportunities to engage with professionals from engineering, food and the creative industries, help pupils understand how classroom learning connects to the wider world. These experiences broaden horizons, inspire ambition, and demonstrate how creativity and innovation shape the communities in which we live.
The ability to think creatively, solve problems and adapt to new challenges prepares pupils for a future filled with opportunity. Whether they pursue careers in engineering, architecture, product design, manufacturing, food, digital technologies, or professions yet to emerge, pupils leave with the confidence to innovate, communicate ideas effectively and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems. They develop the adaptability, resilience and collaborative skills that will enable them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
