Intent
Mathematics helps us make sense of the world. From the patterns found in nature to the technology we rely upon every day, it provides the language through which we solve problems, make decisions, and understand how things work. At Our Lady’s, pupils are encouraged to see mathematics not simply as a collection of methods, but as a subject that develops logical thinking, resilience and confidence.

Every mathematical idea builds upon those that came before it. Through a carefully planned journey, pupils strengthen their understanding of number, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, returning to key concepts with increasing depth and sophistication. As knowledge grows, so too does the ability to reason, make connections and apply mathematics in unfamiliar situations.
Mathematics reflects many of the values that underpin our Catholic community. Honesty, perseverance, and determination are essential qualities when solving problems, while collaboration and respectful discussion help pupils recognise that there are often different approaches to reaching the same solution. Learning to persevere when challenged develops character as well as mathematical understanding.
Mathematics becomes most rewarding when pupils are encouraged to think independently, explain their reasoning, and see mistakes as an essential part of learning. Skilled teaching, carefully chosen questioning, and high expectations create classrooms where every young person is encouraged to achieve their potential. Appropriate challenges and timely support enable pupils to make strong progress, whatever their starting point.
