Intent
Faith and learning are inseparable at Our Lady’s. Inspired by the teaching of Pope St John Paul II, who described Religious Education as ‘the core of the core curriculum’, our curriculum enables every young person to grow not only in knowledge, but also in wisdom, compassion and understanding. It is through this foundation that pupils begin to discover who they are, what they believe, and how they can make a positive contribution to the world.

Every child is created in the image and likeness of God and possesses unique gifts and talents. Religious Education encourages pupils to ask life’s deepest questions, reflect thoughtfully on their own beliefs and values, and develop a lasting respect for the dignity of every person. Rooted firmly in the Catholic tradition, the curriculum also develops an understanding of other world faiths and beliefs, preparing young people to engage confidently and respectfully within an increasingly diverse society.
As pupils move through the curriculum, they journey through Scripture, Catholic belief and ethical thinking in ever greater depth. Each stage of learning builds naturally upon the last, allowing pupils to revisit key ideas, explore increasingly complex philosophical and moral questions, and make meaningful connections between faith and everyday life. By the time they leave Our Lady’s, they possess not only secure theological knowledge but also the confidence and discernment to engage thoughtfully with the moral and spiritual questions that shape modern society.

They learn to interpret Scripture, read demanding texts with confidence, use specialist vocabulary accurately, and communicate their ideas through discussion, debate, and extended writing. Alongside these academic skills, pupils learn to listen carefully, respect differing viewpoints and express their own beliefs with confidence, sensitivity and integrity.
Catholic education is about far more than acquiring knowledge. Themes such as justice, forgiveness, stewardship, peace and the common good encourage pupils to recognise how faith shapes everyday choices and inspires service to others. Opportunities for prayer, liturgy, retreats, chaplaincy and charitable action allow pupils to experience the Gospel in practice and begin to recognise their own vocation, understanding that each person has unique gifts that can be used in the service of others.
Exploring global issues through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching encourages pupils to think beyond themselves. Questions surrounding poverty, conflict, environmental responsibility, medical ethics, and human dignity develop empathy, moral courage, and a strong sense of responsibility. In doing so, pupils leave Our Lady’s equipped not only with religious literacy but with the character and compassion needed to play a positive role within modern Britain and the wider global community.
